Slash greenhouse emissions yourself - the DIY answer to global warming
(Disclaimer: Climate Friendly used to be clients of mine, and are participants in the Byron Sustainable Ventures Network that I founded)
What do corporate banking giant HSBC, the world’s largest carpet
manufacturer Interface and leading mobile phone company O2 have in common?
They’re leading the business world in environmental responsibility by
neutralising the damage their operations do to the climate.
Now other companies can do the same, with the help of a new Australian
company, climate friendly.
“We all know that carbon dioxide emissions from our homes, businesses, flying
cars are slowly raising the world’s temperature,” says climate friendly
director Madeleine Lyons. “That global warming has led to more floods,
droughts and other extreme weather events, and the endangering of species including
polar bears, coral reefs and butterflies.”
“A lot of companies say they care about climate change, but they don’t know
what to do about it. Instead of waiting for governments to cut Australia’s
growing greenhouse emissions, they can take the matter into their own
hands.”
Using calculators designed by former CSIRO scientist Joel Fleming, climate
friendly measures how much greenhouse gas a business emits every year and
invests in clean energy projects on their behalf. The green investments –
including wind farms and shower head exchange programs – save as much
greenhouse gas as the sponsor company is emitting, effectively neutralising
any overall damage to the climate.

“We all know that carbon dioxide emissions from our homes, businesses, flying

director Madeleine Lyons. “That global warming has led to more floods,
droughts and other extreme weather events, and the endangering of species including
polar bears, coral reefs and butterflies.”
“A lot of companies say they care about climate change, but they don’t know

growing greenhouse emissions, they can take the matter into their own
“This is a fast, easy way of doing something about climate change,” says Mr
Fleming, company founder and managing director of climate friendly. “A
company can go online, calculate their emissions and invest in clean energy
projects that offset the unseen gases that their car fleet, airline travel
or office electricity are pumping into the atmosphere.”
“It also gives businesses a marketing edge. Many customers would prefer to
shop with environmentally-friendly companies,” he says.
It also makes financial sense. In the United Kingdom, Mazda invested around
$250,000 in climate-neutralising projects. The car giant got $6.25 million
worth of media coverage as a result – rewarding their initial outlay
25 times over.
Already, climate friendly is serving diverse corners of the Australian
market: the Ethical Investment Association held Australia’s first ever
climate neutral event, and World Wide Fund for Nature neutralised their
travel emissions. Elite fashion labels Tribal Alliance and Slingfings
incorporated climate neutrality into their products enabling consumers to
purchase shirts and accessories with climate neutrality ‘built-in’.
“More Australians are worried about climate change than international
terrorism,” says Ms Lyons. “climate friendly has transformed climate change
from a problem that is ‘too big’ into something businesses can solve
themselves with the click of a mouse. When a company takes the lead on an
issue as important to the public as climate change, customers will reward
them.”
climate friendly also has an online calculators for individuals to make
their homes, car and air travel climate neutral. “For the cost of a
cappuccino and in the time it takes to drink it, people can now go climate
neutral,” says Ms Lyons.

Australians fear global warming
A telephone survey by the Lowy Institute (March 2005) found Australians were
more worried about global warming than any other external threat except
unfriendly countries developing nuclear weapons. The survey of 1,000
Australians found 51 per cent very worried, 20 per cent fairly worried, and
another 20 per cent somewhat worried about unfriendly countries developing
nuclear weapons. It found 46 per cent were very worried, 24 per cent fairly
worried, and 20 per cent somewhat worried about global warming.
International terrorism was the third greatest fear, with 41 per cent very
worried, 22 per cent fairly worried, and 25 per cent somewhat worried.
