Climate Change, Environmental Refugees, and solutions.

August 10, 2005

Thursday 25th August 7pm
Byron Bay Community Center

The Byron Sustainable Ventures Network, in conjunction with Friends of the Earth are presenting an information evening on Climate Change at the Byron Bay Community Center on Thursday 25th August at 7pm. Friends of the Earth will highlight the inequity of climate change impacts across the globe while the Byron Sustainable Venture Network will share actions that local businesses can and are taking to mitigate their impact on the environment.

Climate Change is the most significant environmental issue facing us over the next decade, with major impacts that will be felt worldwide, and not just by those who are creating most of the greenhouse gas pollution. this forum will follow up on Tim Winton’s recent Peak Oil forum, by looking at one of the specific impacts of climate change, and by addressing the responsibility of businesses to do their part in reducing the impact and scale of climate change.

While developed countries have historically been responsible for the most greenhouse gas pollution, creating human-induced climate change, the poor in developing countries are most vulnerable to climate change. In seeking climate justice we strive to add a human rights perspective to the climate change debate, a debate that to date has largely focused on science, consumption patterns and emission levels. Environmental catastrophes are one of the major reasons peoples are displaced, with more people forced to leave their homes because of environmental disaster than because of war. The Australian government must be brought under increased pressure to mitigate climate change, and to accept refugees on environmental grounds. Stephanie Long, who is the climate campaigner for Friends of the Earth will present along with Cam Walker, the national liaison officer for FoE.

The Byron Sustainable Ventures Network is a network of local business-owners which was started about a year ago by Mitra Ardron of Natural Innovation. The people that make up the network believe that business has a duty to care for the environment and the communities we are part of. The network has been gathering monthly to support each other in balancing the challenges of keeping our businesses environmentally, socially and economically healthy. At this forum, SVN’s first public outing, businesses that are part of the network will share some of their actions to deal with their environmental impacts, and in particular on climate change. Presenters will include Mitra Ardron giving an overview, Joel Fleming talking about green energy and climate offsets, Tim Winton on planting trees to sequester carbon, Rachel Bending who manufacturers using solar power, Anthony Michaels who is bringing Biodiesel to the north coast, and Eshana Bragg on community involvement.

Stephanie and Cam will also present the Climate Justice and Environmental Refugee portion of this evening in Lismore at the Winsome on 23rd August at 7 pm and at the Channon Café at 5:30pm on 24th August.
