Resources related to Ethical Purchasing
In February I addressed Byron Shire Council on the topic of developing an Ethical Purchasing Policy - the text of the pitch is here. Council voted to develop a policy, and this page is some resources that might be helpful in that process
This post contains a list of resources related to ethical purchasing, especially by local governments. I will update it from time to time as I hear of any more.
- General Resources and Campaigns
- New Rules - a very useful resource on local government rules and examples. Specifically there is a section on Selective Purchasing.
- Global Exchange - Anti-Sweatshop and their Bay Area campaign which succeeded in San Francisco (ordinance below)
- PICA - Clean Clothes campaign - Bangor Maine (see below)
- ECO SAT - some good resources and tips The North American Green Purchasing Initiative's Self-Assessment Tool (Eco-S.A.T.) is designed to help professional purchasers evaluate their organization's environmental purchasing initiatives and identify opportunities for improvement. Includes a listing of initiatives in US, Canada and Internationally.
- New Dream's Green Procurement Program for Goverments & Institutions
- Local ordinances
- San Francisco - Anti Sweatshop Summary; Ordinance (DOC) (PDF) and Fair Trade and Organic Resolutions. AP News coverage of passage in September 2005.
- California - There were three bills in the California Legislature, one of which made it to the governers desk but was vetoed. SB 1703; SB 996; SB 1528
- King County - Environmentally Preferable Purchasing - showing how it saved the county money as well. There is an interview with the manager of the program on New Dream here.
- Vancouver - took an interesting approach, and split the topic into an Ethical Purchasing Policy, and a Supplier Code of Contact, which is presumably easier to amend to take account of changing concerns.
- Wayne, Pennsylvania - Corporate Accountability Ordinance (including full text) - requires disclosure and allows the city to exclude companies with three or more "violations" over the past 15 years.
- Vancouver - produced an Institutional Food Purchasing Policy
