the wildcard specification is a generic feature of DNS, it's not restricted
to any particular RR type (it seems only for SOA it cannot be used, though
on several other types it would extremely stupid).
However wildcards are most often used on MX - unfortunately in most cases
the wildcard MX' provide semantics not intended by the DNS most domain
administrators. Unless reading the RFCs VERY carefully everybody is
surprised about how they really work.
