So it looks as if the Gopher URL is going to have ? and / in the
body of URLs unescaped when not being used for URL business.

Why the gopher people are so keen on this idea I don't know. All
it will mean is that gopher URLs will break clients and at some point
people will stop bothering with them.

It's a bit like the great British euro opt out. It gives Britain the right
not to participate in the making of decisions on social issues but at the
end of the day Britain is forced to comply with the decisions made.

The web is in fact a global distributed, typed, filestore. I would like to
be able to use commands like copy, type, etc to work in WWWspace. Just like
DECnet allows transparent access to files stored on other machines without
all the piddling about with ftp garbage. If Gopher want an opt out then let
them. Only at the end of the day it is their loss. Their product will be the
odd one out and unless it can provide a clear advantage over HTTP will
get squished.
