Subject: message delivery time

Hello all,

I received the attached message in my mailbox, since I currently manage
the uri@bunyip.com mailing list.

It behooves me to mention that there are, at this moment, 277 addresses on
the uri mailing list. So, yes, we do batch mailing. The life of a uri-bound
message is as follows:

- composer mails message to uri@bunyip.com
- the message is received at mocha.bunyip.com
- sendmail, on mocha, sets up the messages to carry out the
redirection to all 277 addresses
- these messages are spooled on mocha, to be sent by sendmail
in a way that won't totally disrupt other use of the machine
- it can take a while to process 277 messages

Hope this clarifies the process/explains any delays you might perceive.

> Anyway, I'll be joining you on the MBONE (with a better turnaround
> I expect!)

Only, I suspect, if there are fewer than 277 participants :-)

Cheers!
Leslie Daigle.

I sent off a little while ago a batch of

1. New URL spec
2. New Outstanding and recent isses
3. New change log
4. New diffs

I'm afraid that I got the parameters to mail in the
order wrong, so the subject fields may be void. Apologies.
The four files are different, anyway! I don't know
exactly what the result is as I haven't got it back yet.

I have had a feeling of lack of responsiveness from the group.
This is partly because you are all on planes heading for
Seattle. But maybe its partly because of the turnaround on
the mail.

Below is a message which took from 12:48 to GMT to 15:49 GMT
(exactly 3 hours) to get from mocha.bunyip.com back to CERN.
(Compare with around 4 seconds +/- datetime errors going the other way)
Do other people on the list notice this? Is something being
batched every few hours? Is it just me?

Anyway, I'll be joining you on the MBONE (with a better turnaround
I expect!)
