The latter implies unlimited backtracking, and sends shudders V giggles
down the spine of anyone who took undergrad parsing.
Is the *syntax* of a URL designed for human or machine parsing? If the
latter, perhaps some of the basics of computer language design (perchance
the most studied area of both applied and theoretical CS) may help.
