Yes, oh yes! I suggested check digits a long time ago and they slipped
between the cracks.

It's hard enough already to correctly transcribe URLs without error.

Not only could check digits help prevent the processing of bogus UR*
constructs but could make it possible to build a user interface that
helped the user avoid making mistakes.
