Subject: protocol keyword for telephone-accessible urls

Hi,
Self intro first. I'm a 3d-graphics, GUI software consultant, working
for Silicon Valley cos such as SiliconGraphics, Sun etc. My interest
in the WWW is it's potential as a generic model even for info networks
not based on the internet or tcp-ip centric protocols.
In this context, I wish to know if there has been any discussions or
proposals to designate or reserve some keywords in the protocol
portion of a URL to signify non-internet info servers accessible via
non-tcp-ip based protocols. One example could be a phone number for
a variety of dialup services such as BBS, fax-back etc. So, a URL
for a document accessible via phone could look like:
phone://<accescode-phone_number>/<document_id>
This might already have been formalized, and if so, please pardon my
ignorance. Otherwise, what does this forum think of this idea.
Thanks,
- Suresh
