VRML 2.0 RFP's Due on January 31st

The VRML Architecture Group, which has come to be known as VAG, has issued an open request for proposal (RFP) for any parties wishing to offer solutions to the problem of describing behavior and other critical extensions to VRML.

The VAG group expects to receive at least 6 different proposals, and these are the best bets to be proposed:

Just as the VRML community came to a consensus on choosing Open Inventor from several proposals as the original 3-D scene description language for the basis of VRML1.0, the same proces will occur for choosing a behavioral scheme to base the developments of VRML 2.0 and beyond.

The challenge to the VAG Group will be to possibly choose some of the best portions of several proposals into a VRML 2.0 soup of behavioral possibilities. It is important to be able to determine which features compliment each other and which ones are orthogonal to each other, in picking or choosing certain features.

Mark Pesce, leader of the VAG Group stated "We hope it doesn't come down to an either/or, black and white decision on strictly accepting one proposal or the other. We hope to gain concensus with a plan to move forward with a comprehensive spec for VRML 2.0 that is most beneficial to the VRML development and user community."
